DIGITAL TONY: The Yings and Yangs of Sunday

New parties as different as night and day

Antonio Llapur

I've always had this thing for going out on Sunday. You know how in the real world they've got Casual Friday? Well, that's what Sundays are like in the Vegas club scene. It's usually the night of the week with the strongest local presence, and it's also usually the most relaxed.

Sundays also see quite a bit of turnaround in the new party department. Since I started at the Weekly, I've seen dozens of Sunday parties come and go. For example, House of Blues has had at least three incarnations of its Sunday Service Industry Night (SIN) in as many years. HOB's latest, a strictly hip-hop affair called Juice, debuted just a few weeks ago.

Seven and Alesium jump back into the Sunday foray with a new gig hosted by DJs Hollywood and David Christian, and local radio powerhouse KLUC. There'll be a mix of mainly hip-hop, but with a funkier flavor. You'll also hear some house and even some breaks.

I stopped by last Sunday and scoped some kat handing out free passes on the Strip. Time will prove how well it does, but Hollywood and Christian do work well together. They run the insanely popular Monday nights at the Emergency Room. If they can translate some of that fun to Seven, they may have something. And here's a tip: The club party gets started early at around 11 in the p.m., not the usual after-hours time Alesium inhabits.

A block or so up the Strip at the Caramel Lounge at Bellagio, it's a party from the opposite end of the spectrum. Mike Fuller presents the Remix with DJ Scotty Boy. It's all about variety at the Remix. You'll get a host of rock, new wave, house, funk, and even some electro clash mixed up and remixed together. It's a curious approach to lounge or club music, but a welcome one. I talked a bit with Fuller about what he and Scotty Boy were putting together. He described the evening as a chance to get away from the usual club goings-on, referring to the venture as "anti-club."

I'm all for that. Wise man say, "Variety the spice of life." I'm not sure about Caramel, though. It's so damned tiny! And a night that's going to be "anti-club" needs to happen in a more laid-back environment. I don't think you're allowed to be laid-back anywhere within the confines of Bellagio. Still, I'm curious to see how this one goes with the crowds.

THEY SAY IT'S MY BIRTHDAY

Yep, kiddies, by the looks of my calendar, it appears I have a birthday coming up this weekend. My friends have informed me that there's going to be some serious partying in my dubious honor. The official Digital Tony birthday parties are December 7 at OPM's Big In Japan for the first part of the night, and Drai's for the after-hours celebration. And you're all invited! So get off your butts and come party with the old man. Hope to see you all there.
