Sporting an American flag mini-skirt and a Tina Turner-inspired hairdo, Miley Cyrus sang, danced and strutted across Resorts World’s Ayu Dayclub stage on July 4 like there was no tomorrow. Or perhaps we should say, like there was no yesterday, because both partygoers and performers shared a sense of post-COVID elation. “It feels like the first time,” Cyrus said to her enthusiastic audience. “And I’ve done everything. Many times.”

Her electric Fourth of July performance was part of Resorts World’s continued grand-opening celebrations, a once-in-a-decade birth of a Strip casino, which feels all the more special after a year of global lockdowns. Independence Day represented more than just our nation’s freedom; it was also a coming out party of sorts for Las Vegas. Celebrities including Tiësto and the cast of Netflix’s Selling Sunset were in attendance, too.

Cyrus performed a crowd-pleasing set that included “Wrecking Ball” and “Party in the USA.” Her strong voice rang out as she sang a cover of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene.” Underneath all the trappings of pop stardom, Cyrus is legitimately talented.

These days, most concert venues have video screens, but Resorts World blows them all out of the water with its 100,000-square-foot LED screen, aka the exterior wall of a hotel tower. Cyrus’ rock-star stylings were visible for the whole city to see.

As befits any Fourth of July celebration in Las Vegas, a massive fireworks display capped off the night. And when the smoke cleared, an LED sign on the stage promised more fun to come. The Zouk Group party would continue until 6 a.m. with performances from The Martinez Brothers, Blond:ish and Sita Abellan. Dare we say it? Vegas is healing.
