THE PRINCESS DIARIES 2: ROYAL ENGAGEMENT (G)

(2 stars)

Stars: Anne Hathaway, Julie Andrews, Hector Elizondo

Director: Garry Marshall

Details: Now playing

Something fishy is going down in Genovia tonight. Thanks to an arcane legal system, Princess Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) must be married within 30 days in order to assume the queen's throne. If not, a newly discovered male heir (Chris Pine) is ready to step in, the kind of suave and charming prince gawky teenage girls tend to go for.

Mia was a gawky teenage girl who found out that Julie Andrews was her "fairy" grandmother, and that this bloodline made her princess of a small European nation which happens to speak English. What she didn't know was that straightening her curly hair would make her pretty. Now she's an attractive gawky girl who has a private jet, handmaidens and a designer wardrobe.

Aside from being the umpteenth princess movie this year, there's nothing wrong with Royal Engagement. It's kind of funny, moderately enchanting and a little romantic. In a PG-13 world, its main strength is that it's rated G. All the sex, violence, foul language and drugs have been taken out. Along with anything meaningful.
