LETTERS

Speaka da Vegas?

Our satirical glossary of Vegas terms in the April 29 issue drew a nice spate of calls and letters, including these:

I have lived here in Vegas for three and a half years and I ceased to be amazed at how corrupted this town is. Your glossary is right on the mark at unmasking the hypocrisy of this town.

A Reader

Saw your article, which was fine, but what on earth was the reference to Thos. Edison supposed to be about? I know he didn't invent English, and I know you know, so what was this supposed to mean?

Barry Glazer

Editor's note:
Whoa, now you're looking for meaning? Yikes! We aren't sure we're ready for that responsibility. In any case, the reference to Edison inventing the English language is, of course, totally factual. You can look it up!

Whores D'oeuvres, Anyone?

Our April 22 cover story on anti-billboard crusaders continues to generate feedback—or, more precisely, feedback on the feedback, as these letters to the editor about recent letters to the editor attest:

Why did you put "only" letters from those that want every girl in this city to be a whore in your letters section? Do you all even have a clue what you are doing? Not only are you sending your souls to hell, but you are doing all you can to destroy this city as well! If these people (and you as well, if you are with them) get their way, then every girl in this town will be a whore, and that alone will open up the gates of hell on this city. Not only will the Fed Gov cut this city off from any funding ever, but THEY WILL get involved and pretty much do a "takeover." DUH! (Do these people think that they will actually get what they want here? Where everywhere you look there is a whore spread, acting like she's getting drilled on the spot? DUH!)

Also, this city will become a completely miserable city due to the fact of what "whores are like." They don't even want to say "hi" to anyone unless they are getting paid for it!" Do you all watch these girls, have looked into what they are like? They have their heads soooo far up their asses that they should practically be shot on the spot! If any guy makes the mistake of saying "hi" to them (unless you live here, you can't tell the dif between the hos and normal girls), then nine times out of 10 the guy gets told that "he is nothing" by the ho because he doesn't want to pay her for something that is SUPPOSED TO BE FOR FREE! (Again, READ THE BIBLE.)

Anyways, this city IS a part of the United States, and this country IS THE PROMISED LAND, which means that this IS a part of the Promised Land, which means that IT WAS CREATED BY GOD AS WELL, and even almost all the people that live here DO NOT want whoredom to go off like this is Sodom and Gomorrah, "so why have you supported this and only printed letters from those that were for "total whoredom" here and not any letters that were against it?" I'm sure my letter wasn't the only one you got.

Can you explain this? Thanks.

Robert Corum

Editor's note:
Why, yes, Robert, we can explain it. Thanks for checking!

This letter is in response to Villain Hanzo, who wants all the "wastes of space"—a.k.a. LV moms and women who don't enjoy the LV boobieboards—to move out of Las Vegas.

You, Villain Hanzo, are a bigger ass then all of the Riviera billboards put together.

You want women who are speaking out against the billboards that objectify women to get out of town. Well, I have news for you, Mr. Man, there are other people in the community besides you, and we will not be threatened by you. The First Amendment is not just for you. In case you haven't noticed, our freedom of speech is protected also. If you don't like Shari and the other "clowns" in LV speaking out, perhaps it is you who should move. Saudia Arabia is a place where women have no voice. If they speak up and use their voice, it can just be cut out. Sounds like the perfect place for you.

You are complaining that the women of LV shouldn't be worrying about the "evil" billboards but should be more concerned about the homeless, the water crisis and nuclear waste coming to Nevada. Well, here is some more enlightenment for you. The same women who are fighting for community decency are also the same women who fight against Yucca Mountain, help the homeless by donating to shelters and worry about the future of our community's water crisis. What have you done except write a letter trying to force women out of town. Oh, now that's a great cause.

Perhaps I can take up a collection for you to move out of America. I know, I will make up a bumper sticker for your cause. I will put it right next to my "Nevada is not a Wasteland" bumper sticker.

PS: Careful, or perhaps our next crusade will be to get all of those "nasty" LV Weekly magazines that are now on display in public libraries and stores where children can see them, behind a counter.

Editor's note:
See, E., we were sorta with you right up to the PS. We also think Hanzo's letter was over the top. But if you want to know why some people respond so viscerally to the ideology of prudery, your threat—step carefully or we'll target you next!—suggests an answer. Besides which, threatening Hanzo with a crackdown on the Weekly is futile, since he isn't associated with us in any way. We just published his letter, the way we did yours.

No Ideologically Motivated Opinion Left Behind

The 50th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education is May 17. This historic decision gave every student in America a seat in the classroom, today the No Child Left Behind Act guarantees each student an education.

President Bush and Congress are investing more in education than at any point in history. Total K-12 federal spending has already gone up 35 percent, and Title I funding—targeted to low-income students—has already increased 41 percent.

This investment, and the flexibility allowing state and local school districts to develop their own solutions, has closed the achievement gap.

Unlike the misleading attacks on No Child Left Behind coming from some politicians and partisans, that is the truth, and that's good news. As an educator, I believe my work matters. I know the frustration that comes from teaching high-school students who are reading at a third-grade level, unable to comprehend their textbooks. The No Child Left Behind Act will catch children at an earlier age, saving them years of struggles and giving them a greater opportunity for success. I wholeheartedly support President Bush and No Child Left Behind.

Just wanted to send a BRAVO! for the return of Steve Bornfeld's theater reviews! Enjoyable and insightful as always. Thanks for reinstating the feature. LV Weekly is once again ARTS // ENTERTAINMENT // CULTURE + EVERYTHING THAT MATTERS.
