DIGITAL TONY: Bare Pigskin

Football and G-strings, what a town!

Antonio Llapur

I'll bet more people watch ABC's Monday Night Football than go to church on Sunday. Now in its 35th season, the show is an American institution. Another fine American institution are strippers. What do you get when you cross these cultural staples? Surprisingly, it isn't as exciting as you would think.

I wanted to kick off the football season in style at Cheetahs for their weekly Monday Night Football Party.

The whiskey and beer specials were great, as was the free pizza and wings, the two-for-one lap dances at half-time, and the chug contests. The girls were gorgeous ... I think. Cheetahs was too dark, even for a nudie bar. Worse, the game had no sound. Hair metal blared as girls danced and two KOMP DJs made weak stabs at humor. But I couldn't hear John Madden and Al Michaels. I was outta there by the third quarter. Hell, anyone who saw the Packers pound the Panthers knew the game was over by then, anyway.

Why not have the girls do their thing only during half-time and commercials? I went to a Super Bowl party at the Olympic Garden a few years back and that's how they did it. My friends said that's the way Cheetahs was last year, too. I can see strippers whenever I want, but Monday Night Football is only once a week!

Two For The Price of One

Congratulations to Ruth Quinn and Ryan Wahrenbrock, the twins who won the first Palms Girl spokesmodel contest Sunday at Skin. The announcement came as no surprise to many—will we be seeing triplets next year? They beat out 11 contestants to each win the one-year, $100,000 Ford modeling contract. The event wasn't terribly exciting, despite fun moments from emcees, Rain Nightclub DJs ROB and Hollywood. Somebody else having fun was Palms owner George Maloof, celebrating his 40th birthday.

Studio 54's Free Party

This Sunday, don't miss Studio 54's Open Forum. It's free for locals and features members of the Blue Man Group, DJ Javier Alba, acrobats, break dancers and all sorts of fun. On Saturday, it's the 18th annual AFAN Black and White Party at Skin. Tickets are $40 and all proceeds benefit locals with HIV and AIDS. Afterwards, stop by the Lounge and check out the great DJ Miss Joy. There's no cover and she's there every Saturday night.
