Trailer Review: AEON FLUX

Martin Stein

Occasionally, movies come out that are so bad, studios refuse to screen them for critics. To help give you a heads-up, here's our take on the trailers.

Aeon Flux was a cult-hit animated series by Peter Chung on MTV's Liquid Television, itself something of a cult hit back in the early '90s. In it, the titular sexy secret agent from the country of Monica would infiltrate the country of Bregna, ruled by lover Trevor Goodchild, and try to stop his plans or kill him. The series was known for its stylized look, a combination of anime and the French comic artist Moebius, and sexual and violent content, with any sense of plot continuity suffering from defenestration as Aeon often died in each episode, mirroring its creator's own stated stance of moral relativism.

Judging by the trailer, the film tosses those strong points out the window in favor of a underdog, good vs. evil, rebel story in which everything takes place in Bregna (now the last city on Earth) and Aeon is an agent working to bring down the government. Where Aeon I and Trevor I were fearless and amoral, Aeon II is human and certainly on the side of good; Trevor II is on the side of evil.

Gone too are the sadomasochistic and fetish overtones and brutal violence. Hey, you've got to do something to get that PG-13 rating.
