THE DREAM ZONE

with Lauri Quinn Loewenberg

I'm driving the freeway. As I round a curve, there's blood and dead bodies all over, and I'm skidding and swerving. Then I'm on a bus, telling people how awful my ride was. No one's interested, saying they heard it on the news.

Lisa, 42

Lauri: Like your car in your dream, you're working hard to keep some part of your life under control. Rounding a curve means your life recently took a turn. Dead bodies symbolize some issue that should be "laid to rest." Blood is your energy—even if the blood belongs to someone else in the dream. What has been draining you lately? Insufficient energy can make everything difficult! The bus ride says you've surrendered a certain amount of control, as you're no longer driving. No one being alarmed by your story indicates your situation may not be as bad as you think.

Lisa replies: I've long had chronic fatigue. As for the bodies, I work with my husband. We were having financial problems that are now past and I'm trying not to "run into" those kinds of problems again.

My birthday is October 5, 1978, and I just came here from Los Angeles. Before I left, I was thinking that I should get a reading from a tarot reader. Since I used to read cards myself, I like to keep up this tradition, but I didn't, and I left LA in not-so-good shape. Aside from losing all of my friends, I found I couldn't stand my field of work, and was just miserable.

After getting out here, I received a phone call from this girl. Though we weren't in a relationship, all indications pointed to it—she threw me out of her house, then drove me to Las Vegas. In our last phone "conversation," she told me some things that still impact me a month later. I would like to pay her back for the help she gave me, but I don't have any money, and can't figure out how to do it.

Ever since the New Year, my life here has been a shambles. I think of going back to LA, but I know I'll be miserable again. I came out here for a career change, and to continue a career I was working on in LA, but in LA, I didn't have any money, so I haven't been able to pay for the classes, thwarting my dreams again. I would like to know when I'll be able to start realizing my dreams in life, and when I'll be able to pursue them.

Also, this being the first time I've had a goal to help someone, is it a good idea to try and pay back the girl, or should I just let it all go? Sometimes I try to read myself (to no avail, I can't feel my own energy) and always come up with the following cards (equivalent to Ryder-Waite): four of cups, 10 of cups, three of swords, queen of pentacles.

DT

Dear DT,

I learned how to read the tarot with the Ryder-Waite cards, so I'm very familiar with that particular deck (my favorite now is the Osho-Zen tarot).

My interpretations of the cards you repeatedly select are as follows:

1) The Four of Cups in your reading means you've chosen this moment in time to exist and there's innate celebration of the gift of this life. It's a simple card of choice and in your case, the unique realization that you've manifested yourself here. Now that you're here, you yearn for an easier path, but that's not what you've signed up for.

2) The 10 of Cups is the happy acknowledgement that you'll have what you want in this lifetime—it's just a little further away than right now. If you think the world is being unfair to you, you're not acknowledging how much power you have. (We all owe the world the obligation of discovering and acting on our potential—we really are spiritual beings in human form and all the strength that goes along with that perspective.)

3) The Three of Swords is always about a broken heart and the pain of lost love. You don't think your life has value unless someone loves you.

4) Lastly, the Queen of Pentacles is your ideal woman. She loves family, holds enormous wealth of love and spiritual connection, and is the keeper of the family legacy. She'll be part of your life but only after you discover your path. In a way, you're going to have to earn the right to love her.

You'll be able to pay this gal back in the future, but for now, just think of it as a little karmic help. The focus is not the blissful partnership you'll attract after you're 30, it's pursuing your identity in this world.

Find a job that (at the least) is related to your career path. You can't short-cut this process; once you have a job, then you can pursue the appropriate education. You deliberately chose to do things the "hard" way this lifetime—it's OK, though, you can handle it.
