THE CONSUMER: Viva El Dad

Love you more than you know

Anne Kellogg

Dads are a wonderful lot. We owe everything to them because without them, none of us would be here. Of course, if the mad-scientist types behind cloning have anything to do with it, the whole conception thing could dramatically change in the future, but for now, humanity relies pretty exclusively on regular dads. And I think most of 'em kind of like it like that. But we digress. This column is about retail and retail reigns supreme.

The perfect gift for Dad is a loaded question. But the Consumer is not afraid. We love the challenge. The answer is chronological and will be handled accordingly.

A man who is expecting his first babe has special needs that the-soon-to-be mom must meet. He is likely just as freaked out by the new baby as she is, so treat this guy with kid gloves (pun intended). He needs to know he is still a player in his wife's life, so give him something published with illustration showing his baby's growth from conception to birth. Cool dads-to-be love showing off their knowledge of the process. These tomes are available at any bookstore.

Dads of babies and toddlers should revel in their powerful role as fashion dad. Despite the late feedings, diaper changes and general moodiness of the love of their life (assuming Mom and Dad are, in fact, in love), this is when style first starts to show. If he is sporty and likes activities such as soccer, tennis, basketball or running, hit the Adidas Performance Center in the Showcase Mall or Niketown inside the Forum Shops at Caesars.

Like their younger siblings above, children from about 6 to 13 should defer to the mother for the ideal Father's Day gift. But Dad won't ever forget the power of something handmade.

Once grown, there are no more excuses; Dad loves handmade gifts but he might really get something special out of a shave and haircut at either the Art of Shaving inside Mandalay Place or Truefitt & Hill at the Forum Shops at Caesars.

Cigar-type dads may enjoy a memorable stogie from a comfortable shop such as Casa Fuente in the Forum Shops, Havana Cigar Co. on Paradise Road or the Cigar Box on Rancho Drive.

Massages, fine dining and shopping services deserve honorable mention, but stick to the classics: sports, tobacco and grooming, as well as a happy self.
