The Stones

Tickets for these old guys (
MGM Grand Garden, November 18, 891-7777) will run you from $131.25 to $472.50. Plus you have to park, mill in a crowd of AARPsters humming "Street Fighting Man"—total hassle. What else could you do with that money?

• If you want to rock out to classic Stones, a mere $194.96 sent to Amazon.com will get you 13 utterly necessary early Rolling Stones albums as judged by "Mike Vegas King," an Amazon.com list-maker. Of course, these discs only cover the Brian Jones years. (It'll cost significantly less to collect post-'70s Stones.)

• That same $472.50, spent on eBay, could land you a Fender Squire guitar signed by Mick, Keith, Ronnie and Bill ($456.75) or a rare German edition of Aftermath and Out of Time ($435.38—"flawless vinyl"!).

• The top ticket price could fund one-sixty-sixth of a liver transplant in honor of Keith Richard's durable organ.

I've come to realize that to be a lead singer you have to have some sort of vanity in you. You have to have a craving or want for the adoration of an audience. I don't have that. But I love music, I love writing, I love creating and I love singing. But to stand there and do something which attracts more attention is not necessarily innate to me. So that is something I've had to deal with. I am not vain, and I don't need it. But I am happy that people appreciate it.

What? No Bloodhound Gang?

According to
www.music-map.com, here are other animal-related bands that fans of Eric Burdon and the Animals listen to:

The Animals (well, duh)

The Yardbirds (duh again)

The Monkees (they might not have played their own instruments, but neither do real monkeys)

Howlin' Wolf (blues giant who didn't look the least bit lupine)

Iron Butterfly (atomic weight of 55.845 amu)

Os Mutantes (said to tour with a chupacabra)

Zombies (undead animals count, too)

The Carpenters (as in ants)

The Hard Lessons

Gasoline (3 stars)

Michigan's The Hard Lessons definitely are on board with the garage-rock revival, even though the train has left the station. Fans of the White Stripes will likely enjoy this energetic effort thanks to the lack of bass and sturdy songs such as "Milk and Sugar" and "Stop! Stop! Stop!"

Love and Other Garage Sale Items (3 stars)

Where: Art Bar, 1511 S. Main St.

When: November 12, 9 p.m.

Price: Free

Info: 474-9227

A collection of studio material, demos and live tracks, this mix from Mix is, well, a mixed bag. The singer-songwriter has some strong, roots-influenced material, much of it produced by fellow rootsy singer-songwriter Pete Droge. The live tracks, though, suffer from poor sound, and some of the songs meander. The upbeat, tighter tunes are best, demonstrating Mix's talent for engaging rock with a bit of a country flair.

The fifth album from Max Cavalera's heavy metal collective is their most straightforward yet, with most songs sticking to traditional metal dynamics and eschewing the forays into world music that have categorized most of Cavalera's career. That's not to say there aren't any side trips, but the infusions of South American and Eastern European sounds are actually the album's weakest spots. Dark Ages isn't bad, but it indicates that Cavalera has hit a wall, with few places to take his sound that it hasn't already been.
