THE CONSUMER: The Star Trek Store

Boldly shop where you’ve never shopped before

Anne Kellogg

Earth's troubles got you down? Boldly go learn about a fictitious place where no one had gone before by taking advantage of one of our radiant city's best mini-vacations: a visit to Star Trek, The Experience at the Hilton.

Make your way through the spectacular, laser beam-peppered, spaceship-themed portion of the casino, which includes a replica of Deep Space Nine's Quark's Bar. A hallway with a museum-quality time line gives you an idea of what things were like for original Trekkers before you enter the Borg Invasion 4D or Klingon Encounter rides.

But the best part of your journey comes at the end of the retreat in the Star Trek Store, a stellar gift shop where you can pick up stuff you need to take that mini-vacation any time you'd like.

The shop has two sections. The first is stocked with collectibles such as autographed head shots and props from the various TV series and movies, along with some items only a true Trekkie—don't ever apologize—would pay for. In other words, prices are high for the good stuff. Expect to pay upwards of $750 for a Kazan warrior head from Deep Space Nine. If you'd rather have a smaller head, you can buy a set of Dr. McCoy, Capt. Kirk and Mr. Spock bobbleheads for far less. Borg, Ferengi and Klingon bobbleheads are also available.

In the store's second section, you will find the more pedestrian collectibles, such as T-shirts for the whole family, including the baby. The "I'm Givin' Her All I've Got, Captain!" T-shirt accompanies the tribute section to actor James Doohan, also known as Scotty, the chief engineer from the original series, who died earlier this summer.

Latinum chocolate bars and Romulan Ale are great touches, but the Next Generation jumpsuits that look exactly like the cast's deserve a gold star. For $299, Trekkies can buy a decent quality uniform that comes complete with rank-indicating pips and a Star Trek communication badge.

Other products available include DVDs of the entire Star Trek universe, along with some great books, postcards and other collectibles.
