You’re Probably Wondering, “Who Are All These People with the Starfleet Badges?”

Benjamen Purvis encounters friendly life forms (and a Klingon from Vegas) at the annual Star Trek Convention

Benjamen Purvis

NAME: Solvor Age: 200

City: Planet Vulcan (there's no cities. and if there is, I don't know what cities.)

You're probably wondering why I'm wearing an Enterprise suit. Well, Enterprise is one of my ... how can I put this ... favorites. And you're probably wondering, "Okay, well, who's your favorite actor or actress on Enterprise?" My favorite actor or actress on Enterprise happens to be Jolene Blalock—T'Pol. You're probably wondering why. Well, because she was the type of person that never let anything slip away. I mean, she was always there for her captain. She never let her captain down, and she never let her team down. And she's a great actress. She's fantastic—fantastic. I hope to see her again, to let her know that I still support her and her acting. I don't know if she'll remember me; there's a lot of fans out there, and she's a very busy woman.

Diana Hudson, 47

Desert Hot Springs, CA

I've been coming to conventions off and on since 1976. I've already re-bought my seats [for events like actor Q&A sessions] for next year, which cost $1,300. With really good seats, you want to keep them year after year.

Eric Hall, 37

Salt Lake City, UT

This is probably about my 26th or 27th convention over all. I love meeting other fans. I've met people from all over the world: U.S., Canada, Australia, England ... I've met people from Germany, Spain, Japan, Peru ...

James Jackson, 37

Brandon, MS

Our Star Trek club is called the USS Hayes. My position on the ship is chief of communications, so I do anything related to the newsletter and website. We won Newsletter of the Year for our region.

Charles Aston, 21

Austin, TX

I'm not particularly a character, per se, just of [the Andorian] species. I'm playing myself as that species—Lt. Ontas (an anagram of my name). I thought I'd bring my girlfriend and show her the world of Star Trek.

Felix Silla, 70

Las Vegas

I've done so many characters in costumes. People come to my table and they finally get to meet the guy who was Buck Rogers' Twiki [and Cousin Itt on The Adams Family, and the hangliding Ewok in Return of the Jedi ...].

James Brunton, 68

about 100 miles south of Jackson, MS

I've been a member of Star Trek International for 12 years. This is a real admiral's outfit because I'm a real admiral. I'm the closest thing to it in the 21st century.

Catherine Stanley, 84

Sioux Falls, SD

I don't know, I just love it. All versions of the show, movies, all of it. This is my first Star Trek convention, and I really enjoy it. I'm getting my picture taken with Janeway.

Barron Toler, 55

San Francisco, CA

I do a character look-alike—I'm "Jean-Luc Picard with a Tan." Yes, I'm in Trekkies. It turned out to be a good spoof. And from what I understand from one of the merchandisers, I'm all over the DVD bonus material.

Samual McDermott, 26

Melbourne, Australia

After this convention, we're going to Area 51, Roswell, Dinosaur Ranch and to Chicago for the 40th Anniversary Star Trek convention. I'm already up to about $1,500 [in purchases here since yesterday].

Nancy Coglan, 55

San Diego, CA

I made this costume myself: It's the Vedek Winn before she was Kai. It took about a week to make the hat, but it wasn't like full-time. I had a great photo op today with the actor who plays the antithesis of this character, Gul Dukat.

Hailing (last name and Age withheld)

Florida ... Just Florida

I bought this a long time ago, I just never had a chance to wear it. I'm not a Halloween person. I actually never wear any costumes, ever. Actually, this is the first time I wear any costume.

John Stephan, 53

Las Vegas

My club is the IKV KLAS Row, and it operates the way we imagine a Klingon warship would operate. I'm First Officer M'adjahn vestai-Dok-Marr. If we're available, we'll do parties, but unlike most Star Trek fans, we got a life.

Miho Shimura, 20

Shizuoka, Japan

I like Star Trek, and this is my first convention. I bought some photos.* *Miho speaks little English.

Grace Perry, 21

Phoenix, AZ

I have an original series costume that I brought with me, but I don't know if I'll wear it. I'm tall and I don't want my ass to hang out. I need tights; I only have fishnets.

Ken Krob, 66

Los Angeles, CA

Mr. Data here is this little black one and Lt. Tasha Yar is the redhead. We got the original Mr. Data in 1993, and his first convention was in 1994. But these aren't the original dogs. This is the Next Generation.
