Risible Magazine Article of the Month

In January's Vanity Fair, Christopher Hitchens argues that women are, as a gender, not funny. Noting exceptions (Nora Ephron, Fran Lebowitz), he argues that the evolutionary seriousness of child-bearing lifts females to an emotional plane above the need for mere humor, which men, conversely, use to deflect the stinging knowledge of life's general purposelessness and their own lesser role in procreation. That is, he means it as a compliment. Believe it or not, some aren't taking it that way, with The Huffington Post blog site calling the piece "colossally boring" and holding a make-Hitchens-laugh contest. Judge for yourself at vanityfair.com.

Why las Vegas Is Better in the New Rainbow Six Video Game than in Real Life

1. When you dangle from a casino, it's because you're staging an attack—not because the Stratosphere ride broke down again.

2. By simply pulling on the analog stick, you can observe the Fremont Street canopy without stretching your neck.

3. Hooker-ad peddlers on the Strip tend to leave you alone when you're carrying a submachine gun.

4. You can see an exciting shootout in a casino without waiting for the next motorcycle convention.

5. "Heavy cover" means plenty of places to hide from gunfire—not $40 at the door, plus a two-drink minimum.
