Mash-Up

Thar’s a New Club in Town (Again)

Remember the Bar King Frog? What about the Asylum? Meet the newest tenant of 5150 Spring Mountain Road: Barcode, which will move into the space mid- to late-May. There are four new owners: Kerry Lacy, Daniel Mahan, Theron Dickerson and Jarrod Meistle.

The website,
www.barcodelv.com, has a lineup of weekly events, including hip-hop on Wednesdays, a Latin night on Thursdays, after-hours Friday through Sunday (featuring "very deep house," says JL Jordan III, head of VIP promotions and marketing) with Sunday promising a female illusion show called Kara's Candies and DJ Frankie Charles after-hours. Most interesting will be Tuesdays' Passage to Barcode: Asian Night, at which Dickerson promises DJs from Asia spinning Korean and Japanese pop mixed with American music, as well as specialty Asian liquors being poured.

The upstairs pool rooms have been turned into a VIP area, the musical format will consist of hip-hop and deep house, and the stage will remain, to be used for live performances on Mondays, the club's service-industry night.

But Will Paris Show Up?

Beacher's Rockhouse will have a soft opening on June 15, replacing Tequila Joe's at the Imperial Palace. The grand opening will be July 4th weekend, starting July 1 with a performance by Kiss satire band Tiny Kiss, described online as "three dwarves and a fat chick!"—that being Beacher's Madhouse's Lil Tim, Wee Matt McCarthy, Shorty Rossi and Big Beth Mara. "Beacher's Rockhouse is going to be just as crazy as Beacher's Madhouse. We will be taking elements from our show and placing them in a small dive bar. So, a drag queen might be checking your ID and a little person might be your waitress—you never know at the Rockhouse," says Chad Weiner, director of Madhouse Marketing. The new short 'n' sweet Beacher's Madhouse Summer Season is slated for July 8, 15, 22 and 29.

Prince's Empire

Empire Ballroom's Gino LoPinto is a busy man. He's got a live music venue to look after, a hugely popular after-hours to tend to, and then there's this business of signing Prince to perform Memorial Day weekend. Or, to put it in LoPinto's words: "I want to tell you about signing Prince!!!!!!!!!" A touch of the flu kept us from getting LoPinto to tell us more, but we can tell you this: He'll be performing songs from his 3121 album (named for his LA street address), Támar will be opening for His Royal Purpleness, and he'll be playing both May 27 and 28. Tickets are $312.01, and yes, we noticed it nearly matches the CD title.
