December 14’s Tool show at the Pearl featured a number of oddities from the prog-metal overlords—a seven-minute noise loop/light show serving as an intermission, trippy videos full of sinister fetuses and disembodied eyes, singer Maynard James Keenan’s continued insistence on performing at the back of the stage, shrouded in darkness—but none so strange as bassist Justin Chancellor, crouched at the side of the stage during a long jam on “Lateralus,” munching on a banana while playing his instrument with one hand. It was a little hard to tell from where we were sitting, but it did look tasty—and he probably needed the energy boost, given the band’s epic-heavy setlist (only 10 songs in two hours!).
