Beyond the Rope

Rico DeLargo, Top brass

Hometown: Gloucester, VA

Age: 27

Profession: Nightclub musician, freelance wandering minstrel

Profile: Perhaps you’ve seen this suave, chapeau’d piper strolling through the club with a trumpet? While former high school music teacher DeLargo was attending grad school in Miami, he dove right into the nightlife scene and performed live along with DJs. It was a chance performance onstage with the Black Eyes Peas that fueled his desire to pursue music. Since then, he’s played Tao beach, Downtown Cocktail Room, the Palms pool, Noir Bar, Icehouse Lounge and Revolution.

Why I do what I do: “DJs are the new rock stars. I think if you add a live element like a trumpet, it really elevates the vibe. There’s something very sexual about the sound of the trumpet, and I feel like it’s a vehicle for the passionate Puerto Rican side of me to express itself.”

Personal tidbit: A lifeguard throughout college, DeLargo has a profound love of the beach. Though landlocked here in Sin City, he uses his pool gigs to connect with two of his favorite things: water ... and women.

What I’m listening to: Local Las Vegas band Otherwise

Latest accomplishment: Friday, December 14 was DeLargo’s last day as director of entertainment with Access West Marketing, an entertainment and lifestyle marketing firm. DeLargo has said adios to the corporate life (with Access West’s full support and blessing) to pursue nightlife music opportunities full-time.

Quote: “Believe and it will be.”
