Three questions with Dia Frampton of Meg & Dia

Spencer Patterson

We caught up with the one-time Las Vegan as she and her older sister, full-fledged members of the Warner Bros. stable these days, prepared to head out on this summer’s Warped Tour.

What aspects of Las Vegas do you miss now that you’re back in Utah, and what don’t you miss?

Vegas was really different for me. Utah is very religious-based, especially in St. George, most people are Mormon. To come to Las Vegas and see a lot of different religions and different races helped me grow as a person. I found a lot of really good friends there who I miss. Sometimes I miss the Strip—I’d park at some random casino and walk down the Strip and stop at the Bellagio and watch the water show. I think the Strip is actually really pretty in a weird way. And there are some really awesome Korean restaurants there, which we don’t have in Utah. But I have four little sisters, and we’d hang out a lot, and once I took them to the M&M factory and some guy handed my 14-year-old sister one of those little porn cards, and I got so mad. So I don’t miss that stuff.

You guys sound poppier than the average Warped Tour band. Are you concerned about how you might be received?

I have been a little bit scared about that, I’m not gonna lie. I just hope that people can be open-minded, and if they don’t want to watch us, there are 200 other bands they can watch. Or if they want to stick around and see what we have to offer, hopefully people with mohawks won’t knock us down with water bottles and tomatoes. We did Warped Tour last year, but we played in a tent and had to set up the stage ourselves every day. The people that knew us came to see us, but we were so small you had to search for us to find us. This year we actually get a stage and a regular set time every day, which is really exciting.

So, considering how often people must ask the two of you if you’re related to Peter Frampton [they’re not], have you ever considered covering one of his songs in your show?

We never have, and that thought has never even crossed my mind, but I actually think I’m gonna bring that up because that would be really cool. My dad loves [Frampton] to death, and he got us into his music. We’re actually covering Hall & Oates’ “Maneater” on Warped Tour. Whenever Meg would get asked if we were related she’d say, “Oh yeah, he’s my uncle.” But he’s not.

Opening for Yellowcard, with Bayside, The Spill Canvas. July 9, 6:15 p.m., $17. House of Blues, 632-7600.
