THE DREAM ZONE

with Lauri Quinn Loewenberg

I repeatedly dream about the house I grew up in, and I’m always packing because we are moving. In each dream I feel like I’ll never get it packed in time because there is too much stuff. In reality I was not in the house when my parents sold it. So I don’t understand why I would still dream about this almost 20 years later. I never liked the house, and I don’t miss the house.

– Janet, 37, Portland, OR

Lauri: Your childhood home in a dream is not necessarily about the house itself, but about that point in time when you lived in that house. Did anything significant happen when you lived there? Was there a divorce? A death? Abuse? You’re packing and moving in your dreams because, subconsciously, you are trying to “move on” from that point in time. It’s interesting that you say “there is too much stuff.” There must be a lot of “baggage” from your past. You mention that you don’t like that house or miss it. Is it the house, or the time you spent in that house? You are holding on to something, and these dreams are urging you to let it go.

Janet replies: Oh my god! I think you really hit the nail on the head. There was abuse in this house from my stepdad, and I’ve never forgiven him. He’s not alive, so there’s not much I can do. And my mom (who has also passed away) never removed him from the house, and I think she should have. Wow! You’ve given me some good stuff to think about.
