Hanging on to old—very old—traditions in Lorenzi Park

Liz Armstrong

Last Saturday the local chapter of the SCA—aka the 27-year-old Barony of Starkhafn, which covers all of Southern Nevada—held a Viking-style anniversary celebration and bid farewell to their baroness. This meant a bittersweet day in Lorenzi Park, full of rapier matches and heavy-weapons fighting—which, yes, does involve armor—and scriptorium deliverance, titling certain good citizens in the barony.

Without any sort of education regarding particular customs and natural order, it was pretty confusing watching people in puffy pants, Robin Hood tunics, leather-strap belts, crowns, furs, bells, feathered caps, medallions and suchlike bow and kneel at seemingly random times.

But this is a chivalrous nation that's all about giving props to individuals for pretty much anything, including a special ceremony for someone who did a good job manning the troll booth—the admissions desk—that day.

Hip hip, huzzah!
