Po’ Girl

Kristyn Pomranz

Home to You (Feb. 13)

4 stars

A po’boy sandwich is a tasty thing: a fatty roll stuffed with a bunch of meat. No veggies, no dressing, no schmancy accoutrements—just plain ol’ hearty goodness.

Po’ Girl is something like the aural equivalent—musically meaty (banjo! clarinet! mandolin!) and easy going down, but otherwise simple—no superfluous production needed. Despite Canadian roots, this quintet (featuring Trish Klein of the Be Good Tanyas) brings its most nourishing slice of Americana to date. Home to You is a thematic folk masterpiece, a bluesy exploration of conceptual “home” with supplementation of alt-rock confliction. Check the stand-out “Texas”: It’s the most refreshing thing since a tall glass of lemonade—grit and all.
