[The Rant] “National” contest skips Vegas, local comic responds

Matt Markman

The Lucky 21 is a tournament that selects 21 comedians from a 40-city tour. These lucky devils get to perform at one of the fastest-growing comedy festivals in the U.S. (in the Emperors Ballroom at Caesars, November 15, 10 p.m.; November 16, 7:30 p.m.; November 17, 9:30 & 11:30 p.m.).

So why is it that no preliminary rounds are held here? Las Vegas has a small but exceptional group of fledgling comedians that would kill to have the chance to perform on the Strip, literally. I’ll shank a tourist or cab driver for a five-minute set at Caesars Palace. To be honest, I’d knife a cabbie to get an erection.

Las Vegas has been the starting point for big names like Jimmy Kimmel and Doug Stanhope. The advice given by others who began here is, “You gotta leave here to play here”—well, that and “Fifty percent of the exotic dancers at Larry’s Villa are guys.” We want the opportunity. Okay, we’re edgy. Yes, we’re dirty. This is the City of Sin, correct? The last hope in a country overwhelmed by political correctness. Screw it—I guess I’ll see you at the Lucky 21 when I move to NYC ... and I hate the f--kin’ Yankees ...
