Seductive dark lord Ville Valo still presides over HIM like a vampire on the prowl on Venus Doom, even if the Finnish band’s squalling riffs and hefty rhythms now resemble Black Sabbath more than Bauhaus. But Doom’s metal explorations, while impressive technically, just aren’t as entertaining (or as artfully wrought) as HIM’s previous electro-goth theatricality. -- AZ
