Bleachers reappear onstage, prepare for album release

Spencer Patterson

The Bleachers stepped out of the shadows Saturday night ... and into the dark.

The Vegas trio—absent from the live circuit for more than a year—played to a packed house at Rejavanate, unveiling a slew of new material while cloaked in near-total darkness in the coffee shop’s back-corner staging area.

“Pink Floyd in ’67 had its light show to hide behind, and we had our rope lighting to hide behind tonight ... well, not to hide behind, but hopefully to give us a piece of depth to add to the room,” bassist Marco Brizuela explained, referring to the minimal hanging light strips providing the only illumination during his band’s well-received set.

Though The Bleachers hadn’t performed since August 2006 (their previous performance also took place at Rejavanate), Brizuela categorized himself, singer/guitarist Joe Maloney and drummer David Hines as a working band throughout the interim, writing and recording the follow-up to last year’s Suspicion, which should be available locally around February and nationally by summertime.

“We’ve been finishing our record, which is done and just needs to be mixed and mastered, and rehearsing, rehearsing, rehearsing,” Brizuela said, adding that several of the songs debuted Friday night—most of which could best be categorized as dreamy, with a somewhat dark, post-punk attitude—are newer than even the new album and should appear on a subsequent project.
