The lamentable TV trend

Josh Bell

There are at least three new shows this season—ABC’s Dirty Sexy Money and Big Shots, CBS’ Cane—focused on the hardships of being a wealthy alpha male. The protagonists of these shows work in highly compensated positions as CEOs, lawyers and owners of large corporations, and yet their wives don’t appreciate them, their children are ungrateful brats, and they are completely unhappy. It’s hard to feel sorry for these stylish, powerful men, especially since most of them are also arrogant, insufferable assholes. We’re meant to root for them to pull their lives together, but instead we end up hoping for their downfall.
