The 60 second rock critic: The Flaming Lips

Julie Seabaugh

No animal costumes (slutty aliens and Santa Clauses had to suffice), nun puppets or giant Wayne Coyne-encasing balls, but September 16’s Flaming Lips two-hour performance at the Palms’ pool did feature plenty of balloons, airborne streamers and sing-alongs. Highlights included “Do You Realize?,” “Waitin’ for a Superman,” “The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song” and “She Don’t Use Jelly,” and though Coyne’s voice was noticeably husky throughout, his so-very-handsome visage was pleasantly larger than normal, thanks to a nifty mic-cam that projected the singer/guitarist’s mug upon the stage’s big-screen backdrop (dig those jumbo-size nostrils). Yet the big question concerning this smallish, audience-fragmenting, free-with-purchase-of-Miller-Lite-18-pack-carton gig remains: How the hell did the Lips get roped into this?
