Benefit shows raise funds for Engle, Conley’s kin

Spencer Patterson

The local scene is banding together to raise money to help scene mainstay Brent Engle, onetime owner of long-shuttered Underground Records. Engle recently underwent expensive surgery to repair a detached retina in his one working eye and does not have health insurance to defray costs.

The Beauty Bar will host a benefit show on Wednesday, April 23 beginning at 7 p.m., with all door donations and raffle proceeds going to Engle. Scheduled to appear: Sparkler Dims, The Nines, Black, The Real Shames, The Pandas, Necrophiliacs Hearse, DJ John Doe, the Bargain DJ Collective and DJ Angie Jackson.

On April 28, the House of Blues in Anaheim, California, will host “Beautiful Noise,” a fundraising show for the family of ex-M.I.A. frontman Mike Conley. The 48-year-old former Las Vegan was found dead in Chicago last month, leaving behind three daughters and his longtime girlfriend.

The remaining members of M.I.A. are scheduled to perform, along with longtime band associates Todd Sampson (Self Abuse) and Kevin Seconds (7 Seconds) and ex-Dead Kennedys singer Jello Biafra, who signed the band to his label, Alternative Tentacle, in the 1980s. Also scheduled to perform: Social Distortion (acoustic set), the Cadillac Tramps and two of Conley’s post-M.I.A. projects, Naked Soul and Jigsaw. Tickets cost $35 and are available through Ticketmaster or HOB.com.
