The Weekly Playlist: The real Deal

Spencer Patterson

Been a while since you visited with Kim Deal and her Breeders? An abridged catalog refresher, to get you ready for Friday’s tour stop:

1. “Doe” (Pod, 1990) Praised by Kurt Cobain and produced by Steve Albini, the debut LP remains the one to have if you have just one.

2. “Do You Love Me Now?” (Safari, 1992) Standout cut on a transitional EP that saw Tanya Donnelly and Kelley Deal co-exist briefly, then swap places.

3. “Invisible Man” (Last Splash, 1993) “Cannonball,” “Divine Hammer” and “Saints” were released as singles during the band’s brief MTV dalliance, but the deep cuts are where album No. 2 is really at.

4. “Shocker in Gloomtown” (Head to Toe, 1994) A killer GBV cover highlights this quickie EP; Deal’s same-song duet with Bob Pollard on a ’94 Chicago bootleg is also worth seeking out.

5. “Little Fury” (Title TK, 2002) A rousing opener to an otherwise so-so comeback effort.

6. “We’re Gonna Rise” (Mountain Battles, 2008) And rise they have, though given their hiatus-heavy history, was anyone really counting them out?

With Colour Revolt. May 2, 7:30 p.m., $20-$22. House of Blues, 632-7600.
