Our Picks of the Week

1

Get tight with Ol’ Blue Eyes. Nevada Ballet Theatre presents From Stravinsky To Sinatra, a three-ballet program at UNLV’s Artemus Ham Hall. In “Nine Sinatra Songs,” the choreography of NBT Woman of the Year Twyla Tharp is showcased in a premiere ballet for the NBT. The program also features the jazzy, up-tempo “Rubies,” from the full-length ballet Jewels by George Balanchine. A world premiere by outgoing NBT Director Bruce Steivel rounds out the program. February 8, 8 p.m.; February 9, 2 p.m. Tickets $29-$72. Go to www.nevadaballet.com or call 895-2787.

Buy sexy stuff. When you were a child, you gave Valentine gifts like a child—candy hearts and boxes of chocolate and little teddy bears. Now that you’re a big person, it’s time to do away with childish things. Buy the type of gifts lovebirds your age can both enjoy: lingerie, fetish wear, clubwear, props and toys. Deja Vu love boutique makes it easy this week, with 25 percent off all Valentine’s Day items. 3275 Industrial Road. Behind the Fashion Show Mall. 731-5655.

3

Or ignore Valentine’s Day. 4949, the lounge at Santa Fe Station, presents Cupid Is Stupid, an anti-Valentine’s Day bash from 9 p.m.-1 a.m. featuring DJ Miss Joy, photo opps with the Cranky Cupid, V Day drink specials and tarot card readings (just in case there’s still a romantic, optimistic bone left in ya). Bring a photo of your ex for the Burn Box and get a free drink!

Appreciate new Dust. Dust Contemporary Fine Art, once on Main Street, has moved to 900 Las Vegas Blvd S., on the street level of Cherry Development’s SoHo Lofts. See their inaugurual new-location exhibit, Unknown, by New York artist Marietta Hoferer through March 23. “Hoferer is known for her intricately structured drawings made by small hand-cut pieces of clear tape affixed over a penciled grid on paper. Light plays over the semi-translucent tape causing shapes to appear, shimmer and dissolve.” Tuesday thru Saturday from 11 a.m.—6 p.m.

Taste free beer! Lee’s Discount Liquors is kindly offering a beer tasting at its Lake Mead location, 7411 W. Lake Mead at Tenaya. This is not unlimited mugs of Bud or Miller Lite, but  specialty beers—and snacks. Snacks! Tastings start 7 p.m. and go until 8:30 or so. 702-804-9700.

See Paris. Now that she’s a born-again ... uh ... Take in a show. Maybe your significant other digs indie rock, maybe not. But seeing as how Editors came all the way from Birmingham (that’s England, not Alabama) to Vegas for Valentine’s Day, the least you could do is drive over to the House of Blues to see them. And hey, it’s the closest you’ll come to hearing U2 fronted by Ian Curtis … or something like that. With Hot Hot Heat, Louis XIV. February 14, 6 p.m., $18. House of Blues, 632-7600.
