Don’t call them Rockapella

It’s a hazard of the profession: A cappella groups aren’t cool. But Toxic Audio aims to change that with its high-energy show at the V Theater in Planet Hollywood’s Miracle Mile Shops. The show alternates versions of rock classics (“Thriller”) and newer hits (Evanescence’s “Bring Me To Life”) with comedic bits (the chestnut “Coconut” done as an ode to cold season with multiple sneezes, coughs and sniffles forming the rhythm section) and some audience participation. The amazing vocal work is boosted by mixing audio tracks, but the talent is genuine, and the comedy, while old-school to the point of vaudeville, is polished to a high gloss and maintains a disarming freshness. The pleasure of hearing familiar songs reinterpreted in surprising and charismatic performances is undeniable and offers a welcome respite from aerialists—now in danger of becoming as uncool as a cappella once was, thanks to this show. – Jacob Coakley

Friday-Wednesday, 9 p.m., $49. V Theater, 932-1818.
