Cocktail Of The Week

The New Fashioned Twin Creeks, Silverton Casino $10

Xania Woodman

INGREDIENTS:

3 oz. Basil Hayden Bourbon

0.5 oz. simple syrup

2 dashes Peychaud’s Bitters

1 orange slice

4 fresh raspberries

6 fresh blueberries

Muddle fruit, bitters and simple syrup in the bottom of a double Old Fashioned glass. Add crushed ice and bourbon. Garnish with a raspberry-and-blueberry spear.

According to those trusty bourbon geeks at Twin Creeks, the earliest reference to the “Old Fashioned” was in the 1934 Waldorf-Astoria Bar Book. Credit is given to Colonel James E. Pepper, proprietor of Old 1776 Bourbon, for introducing the drink, first mixed in the Pendennis Club in Louisville, Kentucky, around 1900. A new twist on a classic cocktail, master mixologist John DuPont’s New Fashioned makes a softer version of an otherwise strong cocktail.
