Our Picks of the Week

1

Seek out adventurous films. After taking a bit of time off, the CineVegas Art House Screening Series returns this week with Brian De Palma’s Iraq-war drama Redacted. The series kicks off with a special screening of Redacted (benefiting Nevada Public Radio) at 7 p.m. on January 10, followed by a panel hosted by NPR’s Dave Berns and featuring Las Vegas Weekly writer Joshua Longobardy, along with UNLV history professor Joseph Fry. Regular showings run from January 11-17 at the Galaxy Theaters at Neonopolis. Forthcoming movies include music documentaries Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten and Kurt Cobain About a Son, a re-release of the Jean-Luc Godard classic Pierrot Le Fou and a David Lynch retrospective, among others. Listen in. January is notoriously lame for visiting headliners, so why not spend the month soaking up your local scene? Plenty of our Vegas faves are in action this week, including punkabilly stalwarts The Holy Smokes and Yeller Bellies (January 12 at Bunkhouse), folk-rock hero Las Vegas Club*, aka Joe Kendall (January 14 at Bunkhouse), psych-rock warriors The Pandas (January 14 at Double Down) and alterna-rock vets The Day After ... (January 15 at Revolution Lounge). Or you could just sit on your couch, wishing Bruce Springsteen would finally drop by. Your call.

3

Dig for gold. Shedding full, unabashed light on the fact that Vegas is home to some of the most successful gold diggers in the world, for better or worse, The Bank at Bellagio will pit these voracious vixens against one another for an event coined Gold Digger. The January 13 party will have the girls flirting, titillating and teasing their way into the pockets of patrons attending the second week of The Bank’s Sunday industry night. The girl with the most funny money at the end of the night walks away with $5,000 cash awarded by MC Jeff Beacher and host Jason Giambi.

4

Porn in on the action. What better way to kick off the 2008 Adult Video News porn-awards weekend than with the grand opening of the Penthouse Club? Watch as the pages of Penthouse magazine come to curvaceous life with a blow-out party hosted by 100 Penthouse Pets and Key Girls. The action gets hot and heavy on Friday, January 11 at 7 p.m. at the former home of Sin Gentlemen’s Club. Check out the club at 3525 W. Russell Road or just check out the hot new entertainment! 367-6040; www.penthouselv.com.

5

Get psycho with swamp legends. Memphis psychobilly fiends Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers are legends. Fueled by the Iggy Pop-meets-David Byrne-esque stage antics of frontman Col. J.D. Wilkes, the Shakers have taken the underground hillbilly world by storm and garnered support from punk legend Jello Biafra and psychobilly king the Rev. Jim Heath. Imagine Creedence Clearwater Revival dancing to the fiddle in the fourth ring of hell with the souls of Howlin’ Wolf, Johnny Cash and Conway Twitty. Awesome. January 17, 10 p.m., $10-$15. Beauty Bar, 517 Fremont St., 598-1965.
