Our Picks of the Week

1

Orbit. So very few people ever experience the surreal dynamics of traveling to outer space. Now’s your chance—through the show Astronaut, playing at College of Southern Nevada’s Planetarium. Billed as a chance to become intimate with what it feels like to leave Earth’s atmosphere and take a look from both inside and outside the astronaut’s perspective, Astronaut is open through April 26 at the college, 3100 E. Cheyenne Ave. www.csn.edu/planetarium/events.asp

Ace the vinyl. London artist Paul Morrison’s installation of vinyl wall designs will be displayed from February 2 to April 27 in Las Vegas Art Museum’s Main Gallery as part of a new exhibit by the artist, who according to the LVAM website is “known for black-and-white, graphic-style compositions, which feature a pastiche of discrete, highly stylized representational forms that appear derived from disparate graphic genres.” In addition to the wall design, a video by Morrison and a collection of his paintings and prints well be shown in LVAM’s Polis Carver Gallery. A video and six paintings and works on paper by Morrison, making his Las Vegas debut, will also be displayed. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, 1-5 p.m. Sundays, closed Mondays. General admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors 55 and over, $3 for students 13 and older, children 12 and under free when accompanied by an adult. Call 360-8000 or go to www.lvam.org.

Battle. Get your dance on at the All Nation b-boy competition on Saturday, February 2 at the Aruba Club, 1215 Las Vegas Blvd. S., 3-9 p.m. It’s one-on-one and three-on-three; with the winner getting a shot at $10,000 in the Bboyworld championship finals. If you’re competing, pre-register at [email protected]. Or, if you just want to watch the action and take in the tunes, it’s $10 at the door and $5 for cameras. Enjoy DJs Frankie Flave, BZB and Soulrain and the best break-dancing around.

See Chuck read. If Las Vegas is indeed Fight Town, then the UFC is our home team, and Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell is our franchise player. He has a book about his fighting life out, and he’ll be at the Reading Room on January 31 to sign it for you. The event is scheduled to start at 6 p.m., and is free to the public. The Reading Room is inside Mandalay Place, 3950 Las Vegas Blvd. S., 632-8374.

Get pampered. With the Super Bowl on Sunday, it’s Girlie Bowl time at Polly Esther’s nightclub at the Stratosphere on Saturday. Women are invited to prepare for Eli vs. Tom with a luxurious day of pampering on Saturday, February 2, from noon-4 p.m., featuring free massages provided by the Nevada School of Massage Therapy, free manicures and makeovers by Roni Josephs Salon, free spray tanning by BodyHeat Tanning, free wine tasting from Steve Reynolds Winery, free drinks from Budweiser and Stoli Vodka and free food from Tropical Smoothie Cafe and Qdoba Mexican Grill. And to make the event even sexier, the men from American Storm will perform live at 1:30 p.m., and then DeJa Vu Love Boutique will present a Valentine’s Day lingerie fashion show at 2:30 p.m. Kinda makes nachos and beer seem rather archaic, doesn’t it?

Improvise. Quick, name 10 top Whose Line Is It Anyway? veterans. “Drew Carey, Kathy Kinney, Ryan Stiles, Greg Proops, Sean Masterson, Jeff Davis, Chip Esten, Jonathan Mangum, Julie Larson and, uh ... Laura Hall.” Okay, name a place. “The Hollywood Theatre at MGM Grand?” Good! Now just shout out any ticket price that comes to you. “$88. No, $89!” All right, it’s becoming obvious that this off-the-cuff stuff is best left to the professionals, namely Drew Carey and the Improv All-Stars, who’ll get their ad-libbed jokes/songs/dances/props on January 31 and February 3 at 9 p.m., and February 1 and 2 at 8 and 10:30 p.m.; call 800-929-1111 for info. Perhaps former Whose Liner Wayne Brady will pop in for a round of “Helping Hands,” “Party Quirks” or “Scenes From a Hat”?
