MSTRKRFT:

The poor man’s Daft Punk?

Let’s face it: Daft Punk’s reflective helmets, gigantic pyramid and space-age digi-funk trump just about every electronic act out there. But it’s a grave mistake to ignore the futuristic Frenchmen’s less-flashy peers, MSTRKRFT. On their 2006 artist album The Looks, Al-P and Jesse Keeler (the ex-Death From Above 1979 bassist) raved like The Chemical Brothers of yore by melding hip-hop swerves and ’80s electro-disco with robot belches and pounding big beats. The Toronto duo’s remix skills are even more impressive: A squelching re-do of Justice’s “D.A.N.C.E.” gave the original some much-needed teeth, while a recent Kylie Minogue remix sounds like Madonna wielding her glow sticks at a rave. Plus, the gold Jason Voorhees masks MSTRKRFT sport in promo photos? Downright menacing—if not the perfect disguise for hunting Parisian robots.  – Annie Zaleski
