Our Picks of the Week

1

Befriend El Faro. Model/actress Molly Simms will lend a definite air of commitment and purpose (as well as beauty, natch) to the official grand-opening dinner of Dos Caminos at the Palazzo on March 15. A portion of the evening’s proceeds will benefit the Friends of El Faro, a charity devoted to improving the lives of the children at the Casa Hogar Sion orphanage in Tijuana, Mexico. After dinner, the party will continue in the Sala lounge with celebrity DJ Paul Sevigny. Make a reservation and make a difference by calling 577-9600.

Listen to 5,000 Filipinos chanting “whup his ass” in unison. Fans of the Philippines’ Manny Pacquiao, aka “The Mexican Assassin,” will descend on Vegas this weekend to watch him take on the masterful Juan Manuel Marquez, who is sure to attract thousands of his Mexican countrymen to the Mandalay Bay Events Center on March 15 at 3 p.m. for the rematch of their legendary 2004 fight, a draw. Super featherweights Pacquiao and Marquez, two of the world’s best boxers, will be fighting for more than personal pride Saturday night: They’ll also be fighting for their respective countries. Tickets are $100-$600 and available from Ticketmaster at 474-4000 or ticketmaster.com.

Come to appreciate monotones. How much is black-and-white really worth? To local artist and UNLV professor Stephen Hendee, everything. His new site-specific installation at the Las Vegas Art Museum, Be My Suicide, is one of the more intriguing exhibitions currently in the entire Valley, and stripped of color at that. But it only seems to enhance the coolness of Hendee’s singular vision. This is one you really have to see for yourself. Open through April 27. Las Vegas Art Museum, 9600 W. Sahara Ave., 360-8000; lasvegasartmuseum.org.

Get in touch with your inner leprechaun. Think you’ve got the look of the Irish? (Hey, it’s our magazine, we’ll make any puns we like!) Then don the appropriate St. Patrick’s Day garb and show up ready to strut your shamrock with the big (sorry, little) boys at the leprechaun look-alike contest at Fitzgerald’s Casino and Hotel on March 15 from 2-4 p.m. And if you’re a truly brave soul, there’s a green Jell-O eating contest too. Festivities continue throughout the weekend, with cash giveaways on Sunday. fitzgeraldslasvegas.com.

5

Help hold aloft a drum with a Ukrainian dancing atop it. If you’ve never witnessed Gogol Bordello’s gypsy-punk escapades in person, prepare to be blown away. And if you’ve already seen Gogol live, well, you don’t need us to tell you to revisit the wild scene again. Bottom line: If you only see five shows in 2008, make sure this is one of them. With Skindred. March 15, 9 p.m., $22. Canyon Club, 385-4011.
