Gogol Bordello, Canyon Club, March 15

Spencer Patterson

Hey, who beamed all those Californians and New Yorkers into the Canyon Club last Saturday night? ’Cause there’s no way the rabid crowd of more than 500 that showed up to worship at the feet of gypsy-punkers Gogol Bordello could possibly have been comprised exclusively—or even mostly—of Las Vegans, is there?

Could it be that are locals are slowly catching up, and catching on to great underground sounds? Has word of the band’s outrageous Vegoose-opening performance spread across town like a sudden fear of medical needles? Nah. Our bet is those the lion’s share of the wild lunatics who danced, shouted and pumped their fists for every second of Gogol’s two-hour, 15-minute set—exhausting 45-minute encore included—are as native to Southern Nevada as the group’s Ukrainian frontman, Eugene Hütz.

As for the show itself, we’ll just say it was everything we’d hoped it would be (well, almost … Hütz didn’t do his drum dance across the heads of his audience, but otherwise it was pretty damn fantastic), and let Aaron Thompson’s killer pictures tell the rest of the story. Enjoy!
