I ate this …

Going green … really green.

Greg Thilmont

An office-mate recently extolled the healthy virtues of spirulina to me—that’s cyanobacteria, or blue green algae. The vivid green product of pools of water, spirulina is loaded with all the essential amino acids and numerous vitamins. Wandering through the sports snacks aisle in REI, I come across a spirulina-laden Odwalla Superfoods bar. Later I enjoy the bar’s sweet banana and honey tones and notice its pronounced chlorophyll hue. A whopping dose of 500 milligrams of spirulina adds no noticeable flavor to the mix. Nevertheless, since we eat with our eyes, anyone who wretches at the sight of pond scum should probably grab a more traditional granola bar.
