For comedian Joel Kim Booster, 2022 has been a sizzling year, from his sexy Hulu LGBTQ rom-com Fire Island to his hourlong Netflix special Psychosexual to his role in Apple TV+ series Loot.

Now, after that “big summer,” the 34-year-old says he’s ready to settle back into writing … but not before performing stand-up as part of Life Is Beautiful’s comedy lineup, which also includes Latrice Royale, Hannah Einbinder, a Butterboy showcase, Giggly Squad and more. We caught up with Booster to talk about Loot’s budget, how to make romantic comedy happen in real life and what’s next on his busy schedule.

The protagonist in Loot has unlimited cash, which means the show is filled with decadent clothes, settings and shooting locations. What was that like for you? It really does remind you that you’re working for Apple. It is, by far, the biggest budget of any project that I’ve ever worked on. Shooting at “the One” [mansion] here in LA, which is one of the most expensive houses in America, was really wild. And it really made it easy to immerse in that headspace of Loot.

What’s the story behind the title of your stand-up special, Psychosexual? I liked the double meaning, both the literal definition—pertaining to the psychological aspects of sex—and the idea that I identify as a psychosexual.

Fire Island is loosely based on Pride & Prejudice. Your character, Noah, is a skeptic of “true love.” Many of us are experiencing that sort of skepticism right now, especially as people are readjusting to dating after isolation. Can you relate? Any advice? I can absolutely relate to that. I think a huge part of that skepticism and jadedness that I wrote into the character is based on my own experiences. For me … I really needed to be not looking for it. So many of us are so connected on dating apps, and swiping constantly, a completely valid way of meeting a partner that has worked for many of my peers. Personally, I didn’t find my partner until I was actively not looking for one and stopped chasing it.

What’s next for you? We’re shooting Season 2 of Loot early next year … [but] I’m really just focusing on writing right now. I had a really big summer … a lot of different projects. I’m really excited to just go back and focus on creatively writing.
