Coiffure issues? Skaught ought to be your man

Jennifer Henry

To have and to be are the fundamental concepts of existence that separate us from the greater animal kingdom. For example: You can have a cool haircut and not necessarily be cool. Wait, scratch that, reverse it. Who can say what came first, the haute hair or the hipster himself?

Regardless, like everything else in Las Vegas the two are inextricably bound and buoyed by the mysterious forces of "the scene." But whether you have the inclination to rock a black and blonde Flock of Seagulls-inspired faux-hawk with racing-stripe sides (the kind Donnie from New Kids on the Block would have killed for) or you prefer to Plain-Jane it, Skaught "listens to your inner haircut's deepest, darkest secrets and desires and can bring them to life."

That's right, Skaught is not just the second-generation native, Beauty Bar scenester we've all stalked on Myspace; he's a genuine mullet-whisperer. As an amateur coiffeur, Skaught started cutting and coloring his friends' hair way back in junior high and though a love for photography led to a two-year stint at UNLV's Arts College, the lure of untouched locks was too strong to stay his hand. The Academy of Hair Design right here in Las Vegas dubbed him a professional in 1998 and ever since Skaught's been making hair-cutting high-art.

He hooked up with Circa salon after watching them "work together like a happy, functional family" backstage at an Alexander McQueen fashion show. A Bumble and Bumble salon, Circa was a perfect fit for the jet-setting Skaught, who is often in New York taking advanced styling and cutting classes at Bumble and Bumble University.

Skaught's travels have taken him as far as pre-tsunami Thailand and though he will always consider Las Vegas his home, he plans to return in January to help the Thais who survived. He feels that it's his "karmic debt" to the amazing people, culture and community that taught him to "take in and enjoy everything with each passing breath."

In the meantime, Skaught and his accomplices at Vain Productions Inc. are enlightening hometown hipsters as hosts of the weekly Rawkerz, Beauty Bar's indie music and obscure DJ Saturdays. A five-buck cover gets you into the mix, mullet or no.
