Cocktails we can believe in

We asked mixologist George Austin Sproule of the Downtown Cocktail Room to stir up the appropriate libation for Election Day’s winners and losers

For consolation

Drink name: Apocalypse Now

Ingredients: 1.5 oz. Amaro Averna, 1 oz. Heavy Water Vodka, 0.5 oz. Sonoma Tangerine Syrup, 2 oz. tonic water, 1 sprig mint garnish,

Method: Build drink in a highball glass with ice, Tangerine Syrup first. Carefully layer the Averna on top, then the vodka and tonic water. Gently place two straws and sprig of mint.

Sproule says: “Inspired by the Mind Eraser, the point here is to get wasted as quickly as possible! Using the straws, you should take down the drink as fast as you can, like a shot. This will temporarily alleviate and postpone the reality of the wrong candidate (according to you, anyway) being in charge of the country for the next four years.”

For celebration

Drink name: New Day Dawning

Ingredients: 1 oz. Domain de Canton Ginger Liqueur, 0.5 oz. Sonoma Pomegranate Syrup, 1 dash orange bitters, 4 oz Blanc de Noirs Champagne, mile-long orange-twist garnish.

Method: Place garnish in a champagne flute; build drink on top.

Sproule says: “Refreshing and autumn-inspired, toast to winning the election and to new beginnings.”
